100:100 Dr. Thirteenth by Adam Hargreaves

Yaz's birthday is tomorrow and the Doctor, Ryan, and Graham have no idea what to do for when the Doctor comes up with an idea for an amazing birthday cake from a marvelous bakery on another planet along with balloons and candles from the past.  Yaz is sure to be surprised.

It was a cute little story but very little character interaction, mostly just the Doctor running through the universe collecting things. Also, I haven't seen enough of the new Doctor to know if the voices were quite right for the characters which is usually my big test for these books.

42:100 Dr. Eleventh originated by Roger Hargreaves written and illustrated by Adam Hargreaves

I can't remember if I had the Mr. Men/Little Miss books when I was little but I definitely remember reading them to my younger brothers when they were little and really enjoying them.  I was very happy when I was able to find them to read to my children.  Imagine my absolute delight when I found this mash-up of them with Doctor Who!  (Seriously, anyone who knows me knows my love of Doctor Who)  I admit to not being as familiar with the older generation of Doctors as I am with the new series (starting with 9) but I have seen a bit of them as I was growing up and as my kids have been enjoying them as well as the newer stuff.

For Dr. Eleventh, it fell flat for me.  I was really looking forward to it as it was him with River Song, one of my favorite companions of all time, and it just didn't work the way it should have.  Her character's voice was just wrong and it threw the whole story off for me.

For Dr. Fourth, it was a fun romp with him and Sarah Jane and I could absolutely hear their voices in my head as I read.

38:100 Dr. First (originated by Roger Hargreaves) by Adam Hargreaves

For Dr. First, I remember this Doctor as being a gruff curmudgeon and this book delightfully captured that in true Mr. Men style.

107:120 Doctor Who: Revenge of the Judoon by Terrance Dicks

It's 1902 and the Doctor and Martha run into Captain Carruthers, a friend of King Edward VII, who invites them back to Balmoral Castle to meet him but when they arrive where the castle should be, it's not there.  The Doctor soon figures out that this is the work of the Judoon and he goes off in the TARDIS to try and find the King and castle while Martha heads to London with Captain Carruthers to try and figure out who is behind the disappearance. While in London, she is introduced to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and a mysterious society he is part of, a society that gave him a present for the King which he dutifully delivered not that long ago.  Meanwhile, the Doctor has found the castle in the desert surrounded by Judoon. Now he must try and figure out who is ordering them and why such a normally honorable and rule-bound race would be interfering with the human race in this manner.  Then he just needs to figure out how to fix it all and put things back the way he knows they should be.

I always like the 10th Doctor and Martha and this story definitely seemed to get their voices right. It's a QuickReads so there isn't a lot of depth or description, basically a bare bones story but it worked nicely.

60:120 Doctor Who: Snowglobe 7 by Mike Tucker

Written with 10th Doctor (David Tennant) and companion Martha (Freema Agyeman).  The Doctor has promised Martha a nice relaxing vacation on a warm beach somewhere but instead they end up inside a snowglobe on Earth, somewhere in the Middle East.  This is an attempt by humans to preserve this type of habitat from global warming but has turned instead into more of a series of posh ski resorts for the wealthy.  That is, until a creature from another world who was living in the ice that they saved out of the Arctic wakes up and decides that it's time for it to remake the world for itself and it's offspring. Now Martha and the Doctor will need every trick they can muster to save the humans on the planet from extinction.

I liked the story a lot. I thought it was well executed and the voice of the Doctor was definitely captured.  There were twists and turns and I could definitely see this as an actual episode so hats off for that. Unfortunately, I felt that Martha was the weak link. I really enjoyed her character and I could not hear her voice in my head at all. It seemed like this could have been any random person the Doctor had picked up and there would have been no difference at all in the relationship or the dialog from her character.

120:120 Torchwood: Another Life by Peter Anghelides

The first book in the books for the Torchwood TV series.  The Torchwood team is trying to track down a killer that is gnawing out the back of vagrants heads.  What they don't realize until they find the person they think is behind it is that he is just a pawn being controlled by another, almost definitely alien intelligence.  In the midst of their investigation, a storm the likes of which has never been seen around Cardiff is underway and the entire city is flooding and some nuclear rods have gone missing and while doing the autopsy on their first suspect, Owen has come down with a bad case of radiation poisoning which puts him out of the action and left to his own devices.  As anyone familiar with the series knows, that is never a good thing.

I've seen all of Torchwood (even Children of Earth and Miracle Day which were awful) and I felt the writing was a bit stiff in this one at times which made it harder to get into.  Also the plot was really hard to get into until over half way when things finally started coming together which again, just made it hard to get into.  Overall it wasn't bad but it just wasn't great either and I was hoping for better.

119:120 Doctor Who: Made of Steel by Terrance Dicks

Quick Reads with David Tennant as the Doctor and Freema Agyeman as his companion, Martha Jones.  Cybermen are attacking in England but only a few are ever seen.  When Martha and the Doctor end up at her hospital for a visit, the Doctor is drawn into the investigation and Martha is taken captive by the Cybermen who want the Doctor's help in releasing the rest of their army from the Void.

As it says on the cover, it's a quick read which means it is assumed you know who all the characters are and previous events that are referred to in passing.  There is no character development of any sort but it's a fun little read if you know the universe and is great for the younger kids who get daunted by the longer books (or who this book was originally bought for).  I felt Martha's portrayal was a bit weak but the 10th Doctor was decent enough although nothing spectacular.

115:120 Doctor Who: Judgement of the Judoon by Colin Brake

With the Doctor as played by David Tennant.  The Doctor is traveling on his own, between companions when he discovers a distress call from a ship that has been boarded and left in horrible shape by a squadron of Judoon.  After helping the ship, he decides to go after the Judoon and see how he can help them and halt the destruction that they seem to leave in their wake.  The trail takes him to the Elvis the King Spaceport, Terminal 13, in New Memphis.  The Terminal has just barely opened and has been experiencing nothing but problems in the weeks that have followed.  The Judoon have followed the trail of the Invisible Assassin there and the Doctor has followed the Judoon.  Now the Doctor has convinced the head Judoon to work with him in a more subdued fashion to try and find this assassin and bring him/her to justice without using typical Judoon methods.  Along the way, they meet a young girl, Nikki, who is a private eye and whose case seems to be meshing up with theirs in unusual ways as she is trying to track down a pickpocket.  Between the three of them, maybe they can figure out what is going on or maybe they will just be drawn into the feud between the mob factions of Uncle and the Widow.

It was a fun book and it wasn't too hard to hear David Tennant's voice saying the Doctor's lines in my head which is always a good sign that they've captured the spirit of that incarnation.

45:120 Doctor Who: The Silurian Gift by Mike Tucker

Quick Read, 11th Doctor, no companions.  The Doctor has discovered a corporation about to bring out a new source of fuel that they discovered in the Antartic and decides to go check things out.  Turns out, Pelcorp did not discover it but was given it by the Silurians, a race of homo reptilia, that ruled the Earth when man was just a primitive ape.  Pelcorp has forced their cooperation and not all the Silurians are happy about the way their "relationship" with the humans is going and are now bent on using their fuel to destroy the Earth for human habitation.  Can the Doctor convince them to stop?

This is a Quick Read so only 112 pages and lives up to the name.  Simpler language and assumes you know the universe and main characters (I do).  My younger kiddo really enjoys these books and then bugs me to read them as well.  It was short and simple and nothing super exciting but it was a fun little Doctor adventure.
